Tips for finding a job

Here you will find some tips on finding internships, part-time jobs and workplaces.
The Career Service at Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences prepares their students for the job market.

Utilise and expand networks

Think about who in your wider environment could help you find jobs. Fellow students who have already done an internship or have a part-time job, company contacts from lecturers or people from your circle of relatives and acquaintances - your network is often bigger than you think!
You can also set up a profile in online social networks.

Writing unsolicited applications

If you are looking for a job, you should also consider writing unsolicited applications and not just applying for advertised positions.
Unsolicited applications are generally even more common for internships. And the best thing is that with an unsolicited application you are not competing with the mass of other applicants but have all the attention to yourself.
However: such an unsolicited application must be even better prepared than a ‘normal’ cover letter. Research in advance exactly which area of the employer you would like to work in and which tasks you are willing and able to take on there.

Career events

Of course, you will make the most direct impression in a personal interview - because you will quickly get lost in the mass of written applications.
If you do not have any networks of your own that you can activate, you should therefore take the opportunity to make direct contact with potential employers at career fairs and events.
Whether it is the company contact fair organised by the Career Service or a company visit, a specialist conference or a company open day - there are many opportunities to meet employers!

Warning about fraudulent housing and job offers

There has been a recent increase in fraudulent attempts to target students with housing and job offers. Fraudsters often pose as reputable landlords or employers and make contact via email, social media or messaging services.

Typical characteristics of such scams are:

• Conspicuously lucrative offers with unclear terms and conditions
• Requests for advance payment (e.g. deposit, agency fee, material costs)
• Requests for sensitive personal data (e.g. copies of ID, bank details)
• Communication outside official channels

Please be particularly vigilant when looking for accommodation or a job. Do not transfer any money in advance and check offers carefully. If in doubt, contact the university or student services.
