What do I need for enrolling at Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences?

1) University entrance qualification

For a direct university entrance qualification, your educational qualifications (secondary school and, if applicable, university) must be recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Before you apply, you should check this at uni-assist or with the anabin database

Do you have an indirect higher education entrance qualification, so that you cannot start your studies in Germany directly? Attend a Studienkolleg or the Study Preparation Brandenburg (SVB) (see short video) beforehand, which we offer in cooperation with the University of Potsdam for applicants without a direct higher education entrance qualification. The language requirement for the SVB is a B2 level of German. To apply for the SVB, please use uni-assist between 1 April and 15 July and apply for the bachelor's programme at THB that you would like to study after the SVB.

2) Level of German language competence required

Nobody is perfect in a foreign language. Nonetheless, in order to apply for a German taught degree programme at our university you have to pass one of the following examinations in German as a Foreign Language:

DSH2
Goethe-Zertifikat C1
Deutsches Sprachdiplom level 2
TestDaF - 4x4 points or higher
TELC C1 Hochschule with a result of "befriedigend" or better
THB German language certificate at DSH2 level

THB offers an intensive preparatory German course called DeutschPlus.
Please apply via uni-assist by 31st January for the summer semester or 10th August for the winter semester. You must meet the admission requirements for your chosen degree programme and submit a German B2 certificate.

3) Level of English language competence required

For German taught degree programmes:

In addition to providing proof of your German language skills, you must also provide proof of your English language skills for the following degree programmes:

Business & Information Systems Engineering M.Sc.: B1 / Proof of English language skills with a grade of 3.0 or better on the university entrance qualification or by taking a test from a commercial provider at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Security Management M.Sc. and Digitalisation & Management M.Sc.: B2 / Proof of English language skills at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference

For English taught degree programmes:

Mechanical Engineering M.Eng. and Interactive Media M.Sc. are taught exclusively in English from the winter semester 2025/26.

You will need to provide proof of your English language skills at B2 level (TOEFL iBT at least 85 points, IELTS Academic at least 6.0 points, B2 First minimum grade B, telc English B2, Unicert II or DAAD language certificate B2, certificate of the higher education entrance qualification or a first professionally qualifying educational qualification which shows at least language level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and which was issued by a state-recognised educational institution in Germany, in the EU or by a German school abroad, HZB or first professionally qualifying educational qualification from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States of America, Canada, Australia or New Zealand).

Your level of German does not yet meet the requirements?

If you already have a German B2 certificate and meet the admission requirements for your chosen degree programme you can apply for the intensive preparatory C1 German course DeutschPlus at our university. Please apply via uni-assist by 31st January for the summer semester or 10th August for the winter semester.

Your German language skills are still below B2? Attend a language course in your country, e.g. at a Goethe-Institut, or book a course at a language school in Germany.

How do I apply?

Select the degree programme of your choice.
Check when the programme begins: in the winter or summer semester?
Apply with all the documents from the checklist via uni-assist.
Exception: Only apply via the portal of the THB if you:

have already completed your secondary school/a degree programme in Germany or
have already completed a Studienkolleg, the SVB or the Wildau Foundation Year, or
are a German citizen, or
can submit an examination documentation and an evaluation of your certificates from the ZAB/KMK or from the Brandenburg State Education Authority in Cottbus.

You will save time and money if you check your documents thoroughly before applying: Is everything complete?
You apply online, pay and wait. Your application is checked.
If you meet the admission requirements of THB, have applied on time with all the necessary documents and paid the uni-assist fee, you will receive a notification from THB. If you are still in your home country, use this notification from the university to apply for a student visa so that you arrive in Germany in time for the start of your studies. You will then have to submit only your last/highest certificate and the corresponding translation (German or English) in a certified form when you enrol.

Please note: ONLY your last/highest certificate and the corresponding certified translation into German or English must be submitted to our university for enrolment as officially certified copies in paper form.

What is an officially certified copy?

An official certifeod copy is a confirmation (with date, stamp/seal and signature) of the authenticity of the photocopy of a certificate from an authorized body.

The following institutions can issue an official certification in Germany: Local government offices, administrative districts, and lower administrative authorities, e.g. mayors and heads of local authorities, city councils (city halls), district administrations, courts and notaries.

Abroad, the following offices can issue official certification: institutions that issued the certificate, e.g. schools, universities, language schools, the Ministry of Education, German embassies and consulates, the cultural department of the embassy of the country in which the certificate originates, and authorities and notaries who are authorized to issue official certifications.
