It has a budget of approximately €26.2 billion. This is almost twice as much as for the predecessor programme (2014-2020).
The 2021-2027 programme focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transformation and promoting young people's participation in democratic life.
It supports priorities and activities set out in the European Education Area, the Digital Literacy Action Plan and the European Skills Agenda. The programme

  • also supports the European Pillar of Social Rights,
  • implements the EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027 and
  • promotes the European dimension of sport.

The funding mainly supports mobility within Europe, but also to a lesser extent with other parts of the world. Funding is available for students in all study cycles up to and including doctoral studies who wish to complete a part of their studies or an internship abroad.  Students in the Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral programmes can be funded for up to 12 months each. In order to increase the financial incentive for a stay abroad, the monthly mobility allowance for students will also be increased. Internships abroad are also possible after graduation.

Who and what is funded?

Students in all study cycles up to and including doctoral studies who would like to complete a part of their studies or an internship abroad are eligible. Students in the Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral programmes can be funded for up to 12 months each. Under certain conditions, shorter mobilities in the form of "blended mobility" (combination of virtual and physical mobility) can also be funded.

In addition, teaching and administrative staff can receive funding for short stays. Furthermore, higher education institutions can invite business staff from abroad for teaching visits and also participate in multilateral Strategic Partnerships with other European partners, including from the non-academic sector, and jointly develop innovative projects.

For cooperation with business, Erasmus+ offers funding in the Knowledge Alliances. Higher education institutions wishing to engage in capacity building in third countries can do so in the programme's International University Partnerships.

Funding for most of the mobility measures and the Strategic Partnerships is awarded by the National Agencies in the following programme countries (27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Northern Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey). In Germany, this task is performed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
